Şirin presented her paper “Experiences of Migration from Turkey to Germany: The Female Guest Worker in Contemporary Documentaries” on a panel titled “Claiming History through the Voices of Women:
Documentary and Archival Practices by Women in Turkey” at the XXVIII Visible Evidence Conference, held in Gdansk from 10 to 14 August, 2022. The presentation explored two documentaries – Gurbet is a Home Now (Pınar Öğrenci, 2021) and Look, Listen Carefully (Özlem Sarıyıldız, 2021). Both filmmakers are new wave migrants. In their documentaries, they break with the audio-visual cannon representing the guest worker from Turkey to Germany, incorporating women’s voices to the history of migration.
